１．はじめに　Introduction

　２６年前、「日本人の友達ができない」、「日本らしい文化や背景を知る事ができない」、「日本に家族が欲しい」、「本当の日本を理解したい！」という留学生の願いから、この「からいも交流」が鹿児島県の農村でスタートしました。現在までに、７９カ国４０００名の学生達がこのプログラムに参加しています。
　この交流が始まってから今まで、ホストファミリーは、食事・宿泊場所の提供を、ボランティアでしてきました。それは、「世界の人々と家族になりたい」、「皆さんの国のことを知りたい」、「日本の事を教えてあげたい」と思うからです。皆さんとの出会いや交流が、人々を大変勇気づけ、学ばせてくれるからです。
　この交流は、多くのボランティアに支えられた、手作りの国際交流プログラムですから、あなたの希望どおりに行かない事もあるでしょう。良い交流にするためには、あなたの積極的な協力と、理解も必要です。
　ホームステイ期間中には、家族・地域・学校などでたくさんの出会いや体験があるでしょう。それらが、皆さんにとって、かけがえのない大切な出会い・思い出となる事を、心から祈っています。　

26 years ago, 'Karaimo Koryu' was born out of the exchange student’s desire to understand the ‘real Japan’ and to have friends and family in Japan.Since this program has been started, all of the hostfamily receives no expense for hosting. They offer meals and place to stay for the participants as a volunteer. Because the stimulus of cross-cultural contact (which may involve clashes as well as pleasant encounters) provides a tremendous learning experience and confidence-boost for the local people.Since this program consists of many volunteers, things might not go as your desire. For making good use of this program, your active cooperations and understanding are needed. Here, you will be given countless encounters -which will hopefully become invaluable memories and contacts for the rest of your life.The people of Kagoshima and Miyazaki are eagerly looking forward to meeting you soon.


２．なぜ、からいも？　Why　Karaimo？

「からいも」とは、サツマイモの事です。「からいも」は、約３００年前、中国大陸から、今の沖縄県を通り、鹿児島に伝わりました。そして、やせた鹿児島の土地に根をはり、鹿児島から日本の他の地域、そして、韓国へと広がっていきました。第２次世界大戦後、日本人が食べ物がなくて苦しんでいたとき、「からいも」は住民を飢えから救ってくれました。外国から入ったものが、鹿児島を豊かにして、世界へ広がりました。「からいも」を愛する南九州の人々が、「外国の文化を受入れることで地域が豊かになるよう」思いを込め、「からいも交流」と名付けたのです。

Karaimo means 'sweet potato' in the local dialect.About 300 years ago, 'Karaimo' was found from the Chinese mainland to Kagoshima by way of present Okinawa. After taking root in Kagoshima, 'Karaimo' spread throughout Japan and onto Korea.During the food shortage crisis following the World War �U, many people were saved from starvation by the humble 'Karaimo.'  Arriving from overseas, taking root in Japan, and spreading to the rest of the world. 'Karaimo' have enriched Kagoshima.This exchange program has been named 'Karaimo Koryu' to express the desire of the people of Southern Japan to enrich our culture and life by intercultural communication.

○からいも交流実行委員会　Karaimo Volunteer Groups
　
　鹿児島県・宮崎県の34市・町の各地域にあるグループ。受入家庭の募集、交流期間中の地域のスケジュール作り等をボランティアで行っています。
　34 Karaimo volunteer groups are organized in each homestay area in Kagoshima and Miyazaki. They are performing collection of the hostfamily, making your exchange schedule of the area as the volunteer.

○受入家庭　Host Family

　実行委員会に所属し、参加学生の受入（宿泊場所・食事の提供）をボランティアで行っています。
　The host family belongs to Karaimo volunteer group, and is accepting the participating student as the volunteer (offer of a stay place and a meal).
